Top Tips: Achieving Success

By Gemma Louise Bull

At this stage in the academic year, you will no doubt be focused on the importance of success, especially if your child is in Year 5. Here are some of my Top Tips for achieving success:

Tip 1: Be Organised

I am sure you are already very organised but there are a few things you need to do to make sure you are ready for the 11+ exams. Firstly, and most importantly, you need to register for the exam. Many parents miss the deadline which can cause great upset. So, check the website for your target school(s) and make sure you note down the deadline.

Secondly, check the exam dates for all the schools you are applying for. You may have a clash so you need to work out what you can do. Some schools will offer an alternative date, others will not. Therefore, you need to decide which school is your priority in case you are unable to attend both exams.

Tip 2: Time Management

With around 6 months left before the exam, managing time well is crucial. Try to set aside - and stick to - time for study, time for family, etc. Decide before any study sessions which topics you are planning to cover so you don't waste time picking topics. See my previous article about Creating an Effective Schedule.

Tip 3: Ask for Help

The 11+ process can be daunting, particularly if it is your first time applying for grammar or independent schools. It is important to ask for help and advice when you need it. Feel free to send me emails directly or you can post in our new 11+ Connect and Chatter group on Facebook. There are also many other excellent groups on Facebook you can ask questions in. Many educators - and parents - are happy to share their knowledge and experience.

Tip 4: Set Targets

It is important to identify any areas your child is finding difficult. By spotting any target areas, you can address them in the time you have left. If you are working with a tutor, ask for their advice and recommendations for helpful resources to focus on your individual needs. If you are self-tutoring, look at the wide range of books by publishers such as CGP, Bond, etc.

Tip 5: Breathe

This can be an anxious time for parents. I frequently speak to the parents I work with and many of them are really feeling the pressure. They always have me to talk to, in addition to their family and friends. Please do speak to someone if you're feeling overwhelmed. Staying as calm as possible will help you and your child.

With that in mind, please do take some time off. Days relaxing at home - or out exploring - can be a great refresher for the whole family. In addition, if you visit the beach, a museum, etc. you can ask your child to write about it after. For example, write a description of the seaside on a sunny day. Combining fun and learning is a wonderful way to be successful!

Tip 6: Keep the Faith

Successful people are naturally positive and optimistic. They believe they can reach their goals, even when it seems impossible. Just look at Thomas Edison. He tried over 2000 times to create an effective working lightbulb. Despite his 'failures', he was eventually successful and is now remembered for his amazing inventions. Hopefully, you won't need to study the same VR or Maths question with your child over 2000 times but I am sure you get my point. Sometimes we find things difficult but - if we are tenacious and resilient - we can find our way to a successful future!
